Terminator: Dark Fate (MA15+) Fans will immediately recognise just how good this sixth instalment in the 35-year-old saga can be when it truly hits its stride. All contradictions, paradoxes and clangers sounded out by the latter-day sequels are silenced once and for all. This modest, but telling turnaround is achieved simply with the story only acknowledging developments logged in the first two movies as relevant reference points. (Glenorchy)

21 Bridges (MA15+) A solid pulp crime thriller set across a single night on the streets of New York City. While it is a movie that can suddenly swerve from the serious to the silly, and then back again just as quickly, there is a certain something about the way it goes about its business that gets you in, and never quite lets you go. (Glenorchy)

Last Christmas (PG) Warning! The Love Actually is very strong with this one. Very, very strong. Almost overpoweringly so. The November arrival of Last Christmas is great news for anyone who wished there were more happysad British rom-coms about lovelorn Londoners riding emotional roller-coasters all the way through December. Everyone else should immediately grab what they need for the next few months, and start running until someone sends word this movie’s season has ended. (Eastlands, Glenorchy, Hobart, Launceston)

Fisherman’s Friends (M) See review above. (Eastlands, Launceston)

The Addams Family (PG) They used to be creepy, kooky, mysteriously spooky, and very, very funny. But that was back in the 1960s, when they had their own TV show. And again in the 1990s, when they were revived by the movies. But now the mirthfully macabre clan known as the Addams Family – has been fed into Hollywood’s cartoon woodchipper. What has come out the other side are small bits and pieces of the original concept’s charm, and large chunks of joyless filler that flatten all goodwill in the room. There will be much, much better fare for youngsters coming soon with the summer holidays on the way.
