State’s best bask in golden glow of national titles success in NSW

TASMANIAN competitor­s took out gold and silver medals at the Australian Championsh­ips which were played at Club Sapphire, Merimbula NSW last week.

The championsh­ips brought together players who had won their respective State or Territory championsh­ips in singles, triples, pairs, fours and mixed pairs in the past year.

Tasmania won gold in the coveted fours championsh­ip with former Rosny Park and the current World Champion of Champions Singles Championsh­ip

winner Lee Schraner heading up a rink with Kings Meadows’ Rob McMullen, Franklin’s Brad Johns and South Burnie’s Josh Appleyard (South Burnie) to defeat a Northern Territory rink of Trystan Smallacomb­e, Mark Malogorski, Ian Smith and Paul Rodin by seven shots.

Monson, Kings Meadows’ Judy Gurr, North Launceston’s Madge Strochnett­er and Westbury’s Sophie Fletcher was narrowly defeated by two shots for the bronze medal.

The Tasmanian women’s triples team of Invermay’s Candice Hodgetts, Invermay’s Kim Saunders and Rosny Park’s Jenny Suttie won the bronze medal finishing nine shots in front of NSW. Queensland collected both the men’s and women’s pairs gold medals.

The Tasmanian men pair’s team of Invermay’s Gene Ayton and Devonport’s Tristan Bakes won the bronze medal defeating New South Wales’ Aaron Appleby and Nathan Dawson by three shots. In the newly-introduced mixed pair’s discipline, the Tasmanian combinatio­n of South Burnie’s Josh Appleyard and Rosny Park’s Jenny Suttie missed out on bronze.

THE Bowls Tasmania South Women’s Open and B Grade Pairs Championsh­ips start at Kingboroug­h tomorrow with the Men’s Open and B Grade Pairs Championsh­ips starting at Rosny Park on Sunday.
