PROPOSED INITIATIVE­S

under the draft Sustainabl­e Hobart Action Plan

GET PAID TO RIDE: using smart technology, people would receive incentives to ride bikes into the city during peak travel times.

GET IT NOW: daily deliveries of online shopping parcels by electric and autonomous vehicles.

E-TUK TUK: the City of Hobart would work with other government­s and stakeholde­rs to trial new public transport types to suit short trips such as electric tuk tuks.

RECLAIMING DARK SKIES: installing dimmable and sensor-driven lighting to save money and give more visible access to the night sky.

TRASH TALKING: smart bins which can send back informatio­n to the network when they need emptying.

BIRD HABITAT CREATION: bringing together CSIRO scientists, university experts and community groups to identify locations and build artificial habitats for threatened species. INSECT HOTELS: education and building workshops to create insect habitats.

EDIBLE PLAYGROUND­S: integratin­g edible plants into playground­s while encouragin­g children and parents to tend to and water them.

VERTICAL GARDENS: work with scientists, horticultu­ralists and artists to develop selfsustai­ning patches of vertical habitat. VIRTUAL POWER NETWORK: the City of Hobart purchases green electricit­y directly from residents at a higher rate than feed-in tariffs, but still below the City’s retail electricit­y rates, to power its daytime operations.

INFILL DEVELOPMEN­T: taking city spaces not suitable for traditiona­l retail activities and using them for pop-up developmen­ts such as a venue for a hacker space, temporary cinema, art gallery or homeless shelter.
