She means well, so humour her
THE title of comedian Geraldine Hickey’s show at this year’s Melbourne Comedy Festival, Things are Going
Well, says it all.
The RRR breakfast radio host has had a good run recently, and she’s savouring the moment after experiencing some tough times over nearly two decades of performing stand-up comedy.
“I was reflecting on life and I thought ‘Everything’s really good’,” Hickey says. “So I challenged myself to write a show and talk about things going well without coming across as arrogant or showing off. It was quite the challenge.”
The show was nominated for Most Outstanding Show at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and Hickey won the peer-nominated Piece of Wood Award during the festival.
Hickey performs at the Hobart Brewing Co next week, and will be testing out some material from a show she’s writing now.
“The new show is along a similar line [to Things are
Going Well]. I’ve had some big events that have happened in my life this year, and I’ll be talking about them,” she says of turning 40 and getting engaged. “I’ve got some gear about my surprise 40th and how that went.”
Hickey appears in the upcoming series of Rosehaven
(she once shared a house with Celia Pacquola in Melbourne — “the character Gez is named after me”, she says) and will star in Metro Sexual, a TV comedy series being broadcast on 9Go! this month.
“I’m hoping to a do a lot of new stuff from the show in Hobart because Tasmanian audiences are wonderful, they are so supportive and it’s a joy to try out new stuff and see how it goes there,” she says. Geraldine Hickey performs at Hobart Brewing Co in Evans St at 8pm next Thursday (December 19). The show is hosted by Tim Logan. Tickets available at eventbrite.com.au
