Two practices unite at new health hub

- JAMES KITTO

MEDICAL staff hope patients will welcome the opening of a new Sandy Bay “health hub” which has merged two longstanding general practices.

The Churchill Avenue Medical Centre, which opened on Monday, combines the recently closed Medical on Macquarie and Bayside Medical centres into one healthcare hub.

Located near Sandy Bay’s new Hill Street grocer, the centre offers general healthcare services, in addition to pathology, Allergy Tasmania, dietitian services, psychology and skin cancer care.

General practitioner Dr Rob Walters said he expected new and existing patients to respond well to the centre.

“We hope that patients of both medical centres will benefit from the new location,” he said.

“Providing quality healthcare is at the heart of what we do, and this new state-of-theart facility will help us to continue our long tradition of medical services in Hobart.”

Dr Walters said 12 to 14 general practitioners would work at the centre on any given day.

When asked about the parking availability at the site, which borders the University of Tasmania Sandy Bay campus, Dr Walters said it was something the centre would monitor.

He said patients had access to a shared carpark with the Hill Street grocer, which he said offered about 40 spaces.

“It’s being monitored. We’re being very mindful of that,” he said.

“We had no major problems with parking on our opening day, but it’s something we’re keeping an eye on.”
