Rebels clip Condors’ wings

NEWCOMERS Eastern Shore Rebels fought out a hard-earned win against Condors in Round 13 of Southern Touch’s Men’s Premier Division.

Rebels gained the upper hand early and led to the break with a slim 2-1 lead, but both teams dug in during the second term but couldn’t be separated. Rebel Jason Haines helped break open the game, adding two second-half scores to help his team hang on for a 5-4 win.

Tigers had the upper hand early before running out of steam in their clash aaginst the Phantoms, who held a narrow margin as teams changed ends. Phantoms put their opponent to the sword in the second half, adding a further six tries to slay the Tigers 9-4.

Phantom Patrick Fisher continued his stunning early form after returning from a small hiatus, steering his team to victory.

As teams break for Christmas, Pirates lead Rebels on the ladder, with Phantoms, Condors and Tigers rounding out the five.

Tigers proved their dominance in the women’s competitio­n as they comfortabl­y accounted for Phantoms in their top-of-the-table clash.

Phantoms were missing several key players and struggled to fill the void, though Rebecca Norquay stood tall scoring all of her team’s tries.

Tigers led by one going into halftime and, when they returned, kicked into a higher gear adding five scores to one to run out eventual 8-3 victors.

Sharks couldn’t break the resolve of Condors in the last of the round’s matches.

Shark Maddison Graham crossed to score, but it was the only highlight for her team. Returning from the birth of her fourth child, Natalie Heggie stood stall for Condors and Keeghan Smith ran in five scores for the match to set up the 11-1 demolition.
