Tiges roar to victory

- MATT PHILLIPS

UNDERMANNED Pirates were outclassed by Tigers in Southern Touch’s Premier Women’s Division Round 16 action.

Tigers pounced from the blocks to hold an unassailable 8-0 lead at the turn. Little changed as young gun Sam Mills added two tries to finish with three along with Jess McDonald, also with three.

Tigers romped home to record a whopping 15-1 victory.

The match between Phantoms and Condors was in stark contrast with both teams evenly matched. Both teams fought valiantly but struggled to gain ascendancy going into the break locked at 3-3.

Condors playing coach Maddy Smith stood tall trying to pull her team through but rivalled by Loren Johnston with three tries the teams could not be separated and battled out a 6-6 draw.

Phantoms were on the charge in the men’s competition against Condors. Needing the points to secure second spot on the ladder, Phantoms played as though the stakes were high. Led by Patrick Fisher, who is in a purple patch of form, Phantoms held a comfortable lead at the break which they extended in the second term to record a 7-1 win.

Pirates and Tigers played out a thriller. Though somewhat depleted, Pirates got the upper hand early and looked to be in control of the match, but Tigers rallied and got themselves back into contention. Pirates held on eventually winning 8-6 largely because of the leadership displayed by playing coach Toby Jackson and the support of Sam Pettit (three tries).
