Clarence out to rack up runs

- ADAM SMITH

CLARENCE will be hoping to channel the efforts of its premiership side of 25 years ago when it sets about a mammoth run chase against North Hobart today.

In the 1994-95 decider the Roos — led by a majestic 162 from Roger Woolley — overhauled the Dees’ 5-354 declared on the last ball of the match to secure a two-wicket win.

The premiership reunion will take place at Kangaroo Bay today where the hosts face a similar task after North piled on 9-365 last week. Jake Doran starred with 92 before a lower order of Lewis Drury (68), Robb Macmillan (58) and Kyle Scrimegour (41) feasted on the second new ball.

However on a pitch he describes as the best of the season, Roos captain-coach Harry Allanby is confident he has the batting firepower to emulate the feats of the mid ’90s.

“The wicket played really well last week, it is probably the best wicket we have had this year and maybe the back end of last year as well,” Allanby said.

“We bat really deep, we have Dom Humphreys who has come from Brighton who is playing his first [first-grade] game averaging 50 in the twos and he is batting in our last couple of spots. We will definitely back ourselves in.”

The outcome is pivotal for both sides, with Clarence only three points ahead the Dees in second spot as the duo fight to stay in touch with ladder leader Lindisfarne.

The Lightning are in a dominant position against cellar dweller New Town, with the Bucks to resume at 1-22 in pursuit of 406.

South Hobart-Sandy Bay reached 8-262 against University last Saturday and may bat on this morning chasing quick runs.
