South shines but North West claims crown

BOWLS Tasmania South teams dominated the final round of Bowls Tasmania Seniors statewide challenge at the North Launceston Bowls Club on Tuesday, winning all four games played.

However, it was not enough to stop Bowls North West teams taking out the men’s, women’s and overall statewide challenge titles.

In the men’s morning games, Bowls South defeated Bowls North 2 by seven shots with Shane Young and Barry Bone both winning their games and Bowls North West convincing­ly beat Bowls North on all rinks by 35 shots. In the afternoon games Bowls South defeated Bowls North by 13 shots with Shane Young, Barry Bone and Greg Fehlberg all winning their games and Bowls North West beat Bowls North 2 on all rinks by 26.

In the women’s morning games, Bowls South defeated Bowls North 2 by eight shots with Lyn Triffitt and Robyn Leggett winning their games, and Bowls North 1 overcame Bowls North West by 14 shots.

In the afternoon games Bowls South had a comprehens­ive 29-shot win over Bowls North 1 with Lyn Triffitt, Robyn Leggett and Carol Bannister all winning their games and Bowls North West defeated Bowls North by 16 shots. PLAYING on their own home green, the Moama Murray

Steamers won the Bowls Premier League 10 title at the Moama Bowling Club in southern NSW on Friday.

The Murray Steamers were the best side all week, topping the ladder during the group stage and they went straight through to the grand final by defeating the more-fancied Sydney Lions in a tight battle 6-1, 1-8 and 1-0 in the tiebreaker.

The Sydney Lions then met the Melbourne Roys in the preliminar­y final who had knocked off the Brisbane Pirates

10-5 and 5-2 in an eliminatio­n final. In a game that was decided on a measure on the last bowl of the game, the Melbourne Roys surprised the Sydney Lions winning 6-3, 0-7 and 1-0 in the tiebreaker.

In the grand final, the Murray Steamers stormed out of the blocks for a 4-0 lead after three ends and won the first set 6-1. The second set was tight before Melbourne Roys won the last three ends to win the second set 11-3 to level the final. Murray Steamers won the tiebreaker 1-0 for the title.
