Self-generated headwinds

UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA CUTS

-

HAVING prosecuted an aggressive policy for the recruitment of foreign students and then purchasing half of Hobart to house students, the University of Tasmania suddenly realises that it has significant financial challenges.

This from an organisation that hands out degrees in commerce and economics. This self-generated headwind is now going to cost jobs and will eventually negatively impact local aspirants seeking a quality education. Fair dinkum!

ment, have created a big part of their own dilemma by putting too many eggs in one basket when it comes to China and making too many construction and relocation decisions without social licence. UTAS is completely changing the CBD and not necessarily for the better, has overfed on fee-paying overseas students and gluttonised on an excessive range of degrees.

UTAS announced it was going to deliver hospitality training in association with Chambroard, a Chinese petrochemical group seeking development at Kangaroo Bay. Surely that course must be one of those to be guillotined. And forget building a hospitality centre at Kangaroo Bay. If one is needed, colocate it with Rosny College on a fit-for-purpose existing site. Dennis Keats
