Fuel burns smoke health warning

- ANNIE MCCANN

AFTER one of Australia’s most severe bushfire seasons yet, Launceston City Council has announced 16 municipality fuel reduction burns beginning today.

A council statement has warned of health risks for people with asthma and medical conditions who may become aggravated by the smoke.

Those with health concerns were advised to avoid the smoke and check the TFS website for updates.

Launceston parks planner Dannielle Denning said the strategy combined extensive expertise to reduce fire threats to homes.

“The burnings are where reserves are going directly onto urban areas,” she said.

She said the council had reduced fuel loads close to houses since their fire management plan review in 2016.

Meanwhile, the Parks and Wildlife Service is due to conduct fuel reductions burns in Tasmania’s far south today.

Weather permitting, the PWS will conduct burns at Southport Lagoon Conservation Area and George III Monument Historic Site.

The total area will be about 40 hectares and they are likely to take three to four days to complete.

Smoke may persist some days afterwards depending on wind conditions.

Southport Bluff Walking Track, Southport Lagoon Track, Southport Lagoon Campground and George III Monument Historic Site willbe closed during and after the burn until it is safe for public access.

The PWS said people with medical conditions were advised to have a personal plans for avoiding smoke.
