Refreshed Cats ready to go

- JOSH BARNES

GEELONG defender Lachie Henderson says most of the Geelong playing group will come back to football mentally fresh and ready to do whatever is takes to win the 2020 premiership.

Henderson, 30, spent some time in Queensland during the break but has returned to Victoria with training likely to recommence later this week as the coronavirus shutdown starts winding up.

While he said some players might have seen the gap between the Round 1 that was played in March and the resumption of games likely in June as an extra pre-season, Henderson said it was a chance to slow down during what is normally a frantic time of year. “Personally, refreshed. I like being able to control my program as much as I can and that probably speaks to being a bit older,” he said.

“Some will just want to play games and feel like this preseason has gone forever but some will come back like me and feel really refreshed and ready to go into however long the season will be, whether we go all the way even into December.”

Geelong boasts a list deep with experience — 14 players had spent at least 10 years in the AFL system before this season began — and Henderson said that would help the Cats mentally tackle this unusual year. He said he was willing to do whatever is needed would give the Cats a chance to contend for the flag.

“When it gets down to it, it’s really just what your team needs and as you go through your footy career you realise that more,” he said. “Whatever the team needs in that week and time, that’s what you go.”
