NATIONAL food magazine delicious has named 18 innovative Tasmanian enterprises among the country’s best producers.
The Tasmanian producers were among the 124 finalists from across the country in the 2020 delicious Harvey Norman Produce Awards.
Judged across the categories of Dairy, Paddock, Sea and Earth, the Tasmanian finalists produce some of the state’s finest cheeses, vegetables, spices, meats and seafood.
The Tasmanian producers were judged by a panel of local chefs: Analiese Gregory, Christian Ryan of Aloft, Rodney Dunn of The Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School & Eatery, and Massimo Mele of Grain of the Silos.
Andy Jackman of Oldina dairy and artisan cheesemakers Red Cow Organics said it was rewarding to be honoured for their Persian feta.
“It was quite a surprise that we were one of the state winners, and it’s definitely a recognition of our hard work,” she said.
“(The feta) was one of the first cheeses we produced literally in our kitchen. Every step of the way it’s a handmade process, there’s no machines involved.”
delicious editor-in-chief Kerrie McCallum said state winners would go through to the national judging phase.
“The delicious Harvey Norman Produce Awards are committed to celebrating new, innovative, native and consistently outstanding Australian ingredients grown, caught, sourced or produced with dedication, passion, knowledge and regard for the environment,” said Ms McCallum. “The awards give credit to the producers who care deeply about the produce that is served to us in restaurants and on our plates at home.
“Affected by the severe drought, devastating bushfires and now the COVID-19 challenges, it has never been more important to support our farmers and producers.”
The full list of 2020 delicious Harvey Norman Produce Awards state winners from around the country will be published in the June issue of delicious, on sale Thursday.
