Dancer’s perfect landing in empty airport shoot
WITH the terminal empty and few planes on the runway, a different perspective to Tasmania’s biggest airport has been shown through a series of striking photographs.
Photographer Joelle Beekman and dancer Madison Heidenreich had the chance to conduct a very rare photo shoot at the Hobart International Airport.
Madison, 15, said the idea for the shoot had stemmed from a joke shared while having dinner with her parents.
Her dad, John, had connections to the airport, and later asked Madison if she wanted him to try to get her a photo shoot while the site was mostly empty due to travel restrictions.
Beekman said when she was contacted about the idea, she jumped at the opportunity.
“They sent me an email and I was absolutely sold,” she said.
“My vision and Madison’s talent really mixed together to create this.”
The duo knew each other through a previous project, with Madison’s teacher at the
Hobart Dance Academy suggesting her when Beekman was looking for a dancer to photograph.
“In the past I’ve done two or three photo shoots, but this was the first extravagant one,” Madison said.
Beekman said she usually worked without limitations in settings like parks or the city. However, despite the challenges of airport security, the Hobart International Airport went above and beyond to facilitate the shoot.
The whole photo shoot took about two hours, taking the duo onto the 3km-long runway, into the empty terminal and through multiple costume changes.
“We really made the most of the opportunity,” Beekman said.
“I don’t think this could ever happen again. We’re really grateful.”
Both Beekman and Madison and her family thanked the airport for the chance to take part in such an incredible experience.
