United in hunt for Goulding signature

-

MELBOURNE United is committed to re-signing off-contract captain Chris Goulding but won’t begrudge him if he opts to join another franchise.

United CEO Vince Crivelli confirmed that Goulding is the club’s No.1 priority, however he conceded the championship-winning shooting guard could depart the franchise with several teams interested in his services.

Crivelli says the Boomers star has earned the right to decide his own future after dedicating eight seasons at the franchise dating back to the old Melbourne Tigers days.

“We won’t stand in his way if Chris decides to leave,” Crivelli said. “From our perspective we see his jersey hanging in the rafters long after his career is over. There is just a level of trust and respect there from both parties that we will all do the right thing.

“The right thing now is allowing everyone to access the landscape to make a really good decision.

“The club is committed to trying to bring Chris back for next season and beyond and we would love for that to happen. Whether that can happen or not is another thing but that is our intent.

“I don’t think he will want to play for another NBL club. I could be wrong, but I think we’ve got a great relationship with Chris.”

United coach Dean Vickerman has spoken spoke about the guard’s desire to play in Europe, which is not possible in the current climate.

Crivelli understands if Goulding wants to entertain the overseas option following previous stints in Italy and Spain, but he hopes he remains in Australia with United.
