Fortune floors rivals

-

LIGHTLY raced two-yearold filly Lady of Fortune could be set for some feature races in the spring following her impressive maiden win at Elwick on Sunday.

The Siggy Carr-trained and ridden filly settled worse than midfield and was still searching for a way clear as the field straightened for the run home.

Runaway Girl ($3.80) raced outside of the leader Captain Dave ($7.50) to the home turn with Gee Gee Can Win stuck three-wide ($3.30) from the outset.

Runaway Girl with David Pires aboard swept to the lead but Carr was able to steer a course through the field and her filly finished the best over the final 200 metres to emerge triumphant by almost a length from Captain Dave with Runaway Girl a neck astern.

“I’ve had this filly in the stables about a year and she’s given me a really good feel since the day she arrived in the stable,” Carr said.

“I feel she is better when you can get her to the outside of other horses and that was the plan today but it didn’t quite work out as planned in the straight. Even though we had one or two on her outside over the concluding stages they were out of sight to her.

“To her credit she really showed her strength.”

Lady of Fortune (The Factor-Sweet Jaffa) had two starts for Carr early this year for a debut last of nine but beaten only four lengths in the $100,000 Elwick Stakes and she was beaten less than a length at her subsequent start in a 1000m maiden at the first meeting on the new Elwick track in February.

“After her first two starts I tipped her out and she improved out of sight when she returned to the stable.”

Carr plans to give the grey filly a short break and bring her back for a couple of feature races early next season. PREMIER trainer Scott Brunton spent most of the day in the winner’s circle preparing four winners on the 10-event card.

His winners were 2YO First Accused, Shampz Again in a 1200m maiden, Fragment in an open handicap and Kuroset in a benchmark 66 handicap over 1200m.
