World-first bandage trial
AUSTRALIAN researchers have developed a world-first bandage with the power to attack infection and inflammation while sealing wounds.
The team from UniSA in Adelaide predicts bandages using their special plasma coating will revolutionise chronic wound treatment.
The work is still subject to trials and the bandages are several years away from being marketed.
The breakthrough coating has a special antioxidant which can be applied to any wound dressing to reduce wound inflammation and break up infection. This would make the dressings particularly useful to help with pressure, diabetic or vascular ulcers.
Lead researcher Thomas Michl said using the coating on dressings would promote effective healing on chronic wounds.
