Warm blankets from warm hearts

- • BLAIR RICHARDS

A MOTHER and daughter hobby has expanded to include a school community — and created piles of warm blankets for charity.

St Mary’s College Year 11 student Luzie Gillard and mum Bernadette both enjoy knitting and crochet, and for years have been donating blankets. However, this year Luzie has recruited some fellow senior students to make blankets as part of their school community service.

Luzie has organised packs for students to make blankets from donated knitted or crocheted squares.

“They are all knitted or crocheted by my mum or the CWA and community craft groups. We then organise them and put them into packs for the girls,” Luzie said.

Luzie recently handed over 17 blankets made by students to St Vincent de Paul, and will soon deliver more. She said she hoped to continue the project next year, and that the tradition would carry on after she completed school.

St Vincent de Paul is happy to accept donations of blankets, especially during winter. To donate to the Vinnies winter appeal visit donate.vinnies.org.au/ appeals-tas/winter-appealtas
