Not the enemy

-

HARSH words from Greg Barns when he dismisses residents’ groups as “enemies of humanity in Hobart” (Talking Point, July 6). While Mr Barns contributes much to the exchange of ideas, this comment is disappointing. Planning Matters Alliance Tasmania agrees on the dire need for social housing. But let’s get it right. We want planning to benefit all, not just the development lobby. Community groups did not invent globalisation, underpayment of wages or superannuation, real estate hikes causing unaffordable housing and rent, and casualisation. All these keep wages low and employment precarious.

Our alliance with close to 70 community groups accepts appropriate, planned development which allows effective community consultation using council, planning commission and tribunal processes.

To rush major projects, subdivisions, re-zonings, high-rise or high-density developments with little consultation is antidemocratic. Social housing must be good quality, embedded with services and planned, with proper infrastructure.
