Show us your tax: US court

-

DONALD Trump’s battle to keep his tax returns and financial records private was dealt a severe blow when the country’s highest court ruled he must hand them over to New York prosecutors.

Hush-money payments allegedly made to women who claimed to have had affairs with Mr Trump (pictured) are part of a criminal investigation by prosecutors.

“The President is neither absolutely immune from state criminal subpoenas seeking his private papers nor entitled to a heightened standard of need,” the Supreme Court said in its majority 7-2 ruling.

Separately, the court found the attempt by Congress to access his financial information was too broad and threatened the separation of power.

Mr Trump has lost every legal battle so far to keep his tax returns private, and it is not clear how much will be made public and how much will remain sealed by a Grand Jury. His lawyers indicated during a hearing in May that they would comply with the Supreme Court’s order.
