Breakdancers bring the heat for battle
A DANCE initiative will bring locals together and create new opportunities for film, business and earning a $1000 cash prize.
The Nourishing Nomad director and choreographer Raven Grace said isolation had inspired him to create the new “Breakin Isolation” project.
“We thought it would be a good idea to get people together and have a dance competition at the (Hobart) town hall,” he said.
“From that point, it escalated and I asked a friend if he wanted to make a documentary out of it.”
The independent documentary will chart the journey of those auditioning from diverse beginners to advanced backgrounds as they move through the 12week program to train and compete in the eventual Town Hall Breakdance Battle.
Mr Grace said the winner would receive $1000.
“We’ve got six people already but we’re looking for 40 to 50 people to come to the audition,” he said.
“We just want people who are committed, it doesn’t matter what skill or ability.”
Mr Grace founded The Nourishing Nomad dance group to combine his training in Acro Yoga and breakdancing for budding locals.
His dancers have performed at public spaces like Salamanca Square to the delight of passers-by.
Mr Grace said he hoped local businesses would feature in his weekly YouTube videos and sponsor individuals participating in the $855 per person course.
Audition applications are due by Friday, with auditions held on Sunday.
