Distillery’s expansion a real bottler of an idea

- HELEN KEMPTON

WORK has started on a $1 million expansion at Tasmania’s largest single malt whisky producer as international orders ramp back up post pandemic.

Hellyers Road Distillery general manager Mark Littler said the construction of an extended bottling hall and administration centre at its Burnie site would not only boost production but also provide a better visitor experience.

Mr Littler said that despite some fiscal headwinds stemming from the global pandemic, Hellyers Road Distillery remained confident.

“We are beginning to see small signs of market recovery with an order for a container of single malt whisky received from our French distributor, La Maison du Whisky, last week and a substantial order imminent from an Asian client within the next month,” Mr Littler said.

“This is on top of several large orders placed by domestic clients in recent weeks.

“This activity, plus brand popularity and sales growth that was evident pre-Covid, gives us some surety that despite a turbulent year, our products are still in demand.”

The extension to the bottling hall will allow Hellyers Road to produce more alcohol in less time.

The expanded facility will also support further investment the company is making in an increased brewing and distilling program and job creation.

Work on the bigger bottling hall and new administrative centre is expected to be completed by the end of the year and the work is being carried out by Vos Construction.

Mr Littler said the development would create a better visitor experience with plans for a viewing platform so visitors can watch the bottling line.

There will also be a VIP tasting area where whisky lovers can create their own whisky flavour profile from the available range of spirits.
