LOST ON EVEREST National Geographic 613, 8.30pm
Edmund Hillary made history when he became the first men to successfully climb Mount Everest in 1953. But there’s a chance someone may have beaten him to the summit in 1924. British mountaineer George Mallory and engineering student Andrew Irvine set off to conquer the summit that year, and disappeared without a trace. In this one-hour documentary, an expedition’s sets off to locate Irvine’s body in the hopes of finding his camera, which may contain photographic evidence the two men reached the top of the highest mountain on Earth. Did they beat Hillary to the post, as it were? Tune in to find out.
THE GREAT CANADIAN BAKE OFF Lifestyle Food 127, 8.30pm
In the Canadian version of this popular franchise, 10 of the country’s most passionate bakers go head to head for the ultimate bragging rights. In tonight’s series premiere, the bakers are given two hours to make 24 cupcakes with two different types of flavours. Next up, they must tackle a cherry and pistachio Battenberg cake with marzipan, fondant, and jam. For the showstopper, a chocolate layer cake is in order containing at least two different kinds of chocolate. For the more savoury-inclined, next week’s episode tackles bread. The Great Canadian Bake Off is hosted by actors Dan Levy and Julia Chan.
JUDGE RINDER’S CRIME STORIES Crime + Investigation 609, 8.30pm
This series follows British criminal barrister Robert Rinder (pictured) as he reviews some of Britain’s most shocking crimes. In tonight’s double bill, a woman’s life is in the balance after she escapes years of coercive control and domestic abuse. Meanwhile, the tragic case of 16-year-old Thomas Edwards, who was killed after a hit-and-run accident, is explored. The following episode shines a spotlight on the horrific murder of two nine-year-old girls in Brighton, England, in 1986 that shocked the nation – Nicola and Karen’s families campaigned for 32 years to bring the man responsible to justice. The last case investigates gun smugglers suspected of bringing lethal military-style weapons into the UK.
