All the Minecraft world is a stage

- ANNIE MCCANN

HUGELY popular game Minecraft will host some of Tassie’s best performers in a festival this weekend thanks to the innovations of a teen musician.

Seventeen-year-old Elliott Law, who performs as electronic artist Hazchem, has spent three months with 10 creators building a virtual world for the HAZFEST event.

Elliott said the “massive” grounds consisted of what you would expect at a festival – two stages, food vans, and VIP and dance areas.

“You can see other peoples’ pixelated avatars, you can dance, move around, run, you can use the chat to talk to people,” he said.

Elliott said the festival was free, with a capacity of 300 guests at a time.

Those buying VIP tickets can access an extra area and meet the artists.

The Tasmanian line-up will include ARIA award winner Monique Brumby, Hugo Bladel, ZIOS, Out of Context (OOC) and Hazchem.

Elliott said anyone could create a Minecraft account and navigate the program with ease, with some performers learning how to jump and dance on stage especially for HAZFEST.

“The main goals are to support the artists with financial and mental support because no one’s had any gigs for ages,” he said.

“We’re really hoping to give everyone something brand new to look forward to, help the gaming community and music community.

“This is going to be quite a surreal event.”

HAZFEST started on Friday and continues today from 3-10pm via hazchemsound.wixsite.com/website. Visit @hazfest – tasmania on Instagram or hazfest.net for more information.
