Shiver me timbers, cold snap ahoy

- ANNIE MCCANN

TASMANIANS were making the most of the sunshine on Sunday ahead of a wild week of snow, wind and ice.

Windeward Bound shipmate Greg Dennis said he used the mild weekend conditions to conduct some much-needed restorations.

“I’ve been redecking and restoring the vessel, you can’t do that in cold and wet weather,” he said. “We’ll tarp over the left side this afternoon and tape it up.

“I’m just trying to get stuff finished off before the rain hits.”

The warm weekend is soon to dissipate with a cold snap due on Monday.

Meteorologist Luke Johnston said a low pressure system would bring strong and icy southerly winds, with snow settling down to about 200m in elevated towns and suburbs around Hobart on Tuesday morning.

“Snow-covered roads will make driving dangerous from Monday afternoon,” Mr Johnston said.

“The cold conditions are going to last right to the end of the week even though the snow and winds begin to ease on Wednesday.”

Hobart will reach 10C on Monday, 8C on Tuesday, 9C on Wednesday and 10C on

Thursday and Friday.

Mr Johnston said Hobart could expect a Tuesday low of 0C, with minus overnight temperatures as low as -8C about the state through the week.

Winds will peak at about 90km/h on Wednesday morning with showers in the south and east.

A Wednesday minimum of -3C is forecast for Launceston with a brisk Friday morning bringing a low of -4C.
