Staff step up action over headmaster

- KASEY WILKINS

THE headmaster of a leading Tasmanian school could be removed following a third vote of no confidence against him.

Independent Education Union members at Launceston Church Grammar called for the immediate removal of headmaster Richard Ford in an online meeting on Thursday night.

Mr Ford initially came under fire earlier in February, with staff threatening to strike due to dissatisfaction with the school’s senior leadership and lack of consultation.

Thursday’s meeting was the third vote of no confidence moved against the headmaster.

Despite the dissatisfaction of staff, he has kept the support of the school’s board.

The Mercury understands if the board does not remove Mr Ford as headmaster by Wednesday, staff will vote on a motion of no confidence against the school board, a move that is believed to be a Tasmanian first.

In a letter to staff on Friday, board chairman Nigel Bailey said he received correspondence from the IEU Victoria Tasmania on Thursday night alerting him to the vote and demands for Mr Ford’s immediate removal.

“It was reported that 80 staff voted in favour, with one against. The school employs a total of 265 staff,” Mr Bailey said.

“I wish to make it clear that the board is steadfast and united in its support of the headmaster and the direction of the school.

“While this result is disappointing, equally disappointing is the course of action taken.”

He said in enterprise bargaining agreements this year, a key component was to improve consultation with staff.

Following an apology made by Mr Ford to staff in March, a consultative forum was established that has met twice.

“The board and headmaster will … remain fully focused on the immediate priorities of continuing the superb education of our students,” Mr Bailey said.

“The board makes no apologies for requiring the continued improvement of the learning and pastoral outcomes of students.”

He said the board would “continue to listen” and act within the best interests of the whole school community.
