Graduates aim high
WHEN it comes to challenges, beating OHA’s rampant women’s Premier League hockey side is fast becoming the Everest.
But second-placed North-West Graduates will be out to inflict some damage to the Ships’ imposing perfect record that includes scoring 29 goals and conceding just twice in six games.
Graduates drew 2-2 with defending champion Derwent last weekend and the signs were there that their forward line was starting to click after a slow start since the restart.
“I think OHA have been the team that have taken most of their opportunities, which has definitely helped them,” Graduates forward Ashleigh Arthur said.
“If we play our game and take our opportunities on the weekend, we will have a good chance.
“I think over the previous few weeks our forward line has started to link up well, which will be critical for us.”
Inside forward Grace Calvert scored a contender for goal of the season against Derwent, while goalkeeper Kaycee Ponting looks assured in her first Premier League season.
“The whole team has been playing well. We have a few new players in the team this year which has been very beneficial to us as a group and hopefully we continue to improve through the season.
“Securing second position is critical for us, especially with the shortened season, and it allows us to close the gap between OHA and us (if Graduates win). “
Sarah Pascoe returns for Graduates, while OHA striker Sofie McLeod will be out to build on her purple patch having scored three goals in the past fortnight.
Canterbury will also be out to turn the tables on their opponents DiamondBacks from 2.45pm, after the
Snakes feasted on the Lions to the tune of a 5-0 win last time out.
DiamondBacks forward Lauren Smith announced herself to the competition after relocating from Sydney in that match, scoring two goals.
All eyes will be on which Derwent and University sides front up for their 4.15pm clash, with both youthful line-ups demonstrating their immense potential in recent weeks but suffering from lapses in concentration.
