Lions snatch it with strike of brilliance

A BICYCLE kick goal against your former side?

It is all in a day’s work for Kingborough Lions forward Adam McKeown, with the Lions’ No. 14 producing a spectacular overhead kick to help his side down the Clarence Zebras last Saturday afternoon.

McKeown’s acrobatic goal opened the scoring for the visiting side, with undefeated Kingborough downing Clarence 2-1 at Wentworth Park.

The goal came in just the fourth minute, when the Lions crossed a ball in from a free kick. McKeown then reacted instantly, launching himself into the air before kicking the ball over his head and into the back of the net, past the stunned Clarence defence.

When asked what ran through his head in the leadup to the acrobatic effort McKeown was quick to show how much natural ability was involved.

“It was all just reaction really, just instinct. I threw my body at it,” he said.

McKeown explained he saw the defender drop off his back and with the ball in an awkward position for a header, the bicycle was the best option.

“It was a great moment.” After the initial joy of scoring the goal McKeown wheeled away in jubilation, thinking about taking his shirt off to celebrate.

“I was (thinking of taking my shirt off) at the time,” McKeown said. “A lot of adrenaline kicked in but common sense told me I didn’t want a card that early.”

The result keeps the Lions in second position on the ladder, with two wins and a draw and Adam was hoping to build on these results.

“Finishing top four is our goal, along with challenging for the title,” he said.

The Lions play host to the winless Launceston City this afternoon at Lightwood Park and will be looking to place pressure on league leader Devonport.
