Plenty to see and do for the whole family

-

FRANKLIN may only appear a small riverside village, but there’s plenty to see and do there to keep the whole family entertained. Here’s a selection of activities to enjoy.

Try cider tasting and lunch at Frank’s Cider House & Café. Enjoy a Huon Valley produce menu, multi award-winning ciders, with juice and milkshakes for the kids.

Discover the history of the Tasmanian apple industry in Frank’s apple museum and purchase local products such as Huon pine woodcraft and local preserves.

Tour the Wooden Boat Centre and learn the history of timber boat building on the Huon River, and watch traditional wooden craft under construction.

In the afternoon, sail on the Huon River aboard The Yukon, Franklin’s resident tall ship. It offers calm water cruising and spectacular views of the river. Children have the chance to steer the boat and help hoist the sails.

On day two, drive to Tahune Adventures via Geeveston and enjoy a Twin Rivers Adventure rafting tour and then stop off at the cafe for a delicious lunch. Explore walking tracks and go above the canopy on the Tahune Airwalk and walk the suspension bridges.

Drive back to Franklin, stopping off at the Wall of Lollies shop in Geeveston. You could also try the Geeveston Platypus Walk along the Kermandie River. Back at Franklin, try Huon Little Treasures Thai Restaurant. Both Thai and western food available.

On your next day in the Huon Valley, head to nearby Huonville and take a ride on the Huon Jet north along the Huon River.

This is another absolute highlight for the children. Huon pines and sea eagles are added attractions, as well as the jet boat speed!

Visit the Honey Pot for Huon Valley honey tastings, and purchases of locally made honey and related products. Children will enjoy many items such as bee gumboots.

For the adults, try Wine tasting at Kate Hill Wines and the family could enjoy lunch at Home Hill Winery.
