Phoenix mauled by Wolves in GF replay

- ADAM SMITH

THE Southern Basketball League women’s grand final rematch turned into a onesided affair with Southern Wolves easily accounting for Hobart Phoenix in round seven.

On the back of a roundhigh 40 points from Ellie Collins, the Wolves controlled the game from the second quarter onward to win 79-63.

While Collins was the dominant individual, a combined 29 points from fellow NBL1 stars Tayla Roberts and Brooke Brown saw the Wolves take premiership favouritism, while the only shining light for Phoenix was a 39-point haul from Sharna Thompson.

The return of Sarah O’Neill from injury powered Glenorchy Spartans to a blowout result against KingboroughHuon Kings.

O’Neill was a game-time decision before being passed fit and despite playing limited minutes, she poured in 31 points in the 81-36 rout of a Kings outfit missing Josie Greenwood.

A talent-laden Kingborough-Huon men’s side fared better in its clash with Southern Wolves, powering to a 94-67 win. Emerging NBL1 talent Elijah Pawson (33 points) and Noah Straatsma (27) led the charge, with Jacob Richards pitching in with 12 points.

For the Wolves, veteran BJ Radcliffe once again carried the scoring load with 27 points, while Izach Collins posted his best game of the season in scoring 16 and making the only free-throw of the night for the team.

In the final match of the round, Hobart Phoenix ground out a 70-60 victory over the Grenadiers, with veteran Robbie Inches returning to lead the team with 21 points.
