State-of-the-art theatre to inspire the state of school arts
A STATE-of-the-art theatre has opened at a Hobart school.
The Mt Nelson Theatre at Hobart College has reopened after undergoing a $2.64m refurbishment.
Changes to the space include disability access and facilities, a more functional foyer, modern features and the ability to hold about 600 people.
“It’s absolutely fantastic to have had this refurbishment, it brought an ageing part of the college into the 21st century,” Hobart College principal Tracy Siedler said.
“Performance arts are so critical to developing creativity and developing creative skills.
“We value arts education and we hope students are inspired by the new facilities.”
Mrs Siedler said the improved space would allow students to be taught in industry-standard facilities, with the latest LED lighting rigs and data networks closing the gap between school and the industry.
Award-winning Tasmanian architect and interior design practice Cumulus Studios designed the project, while Tasmanian company Haven Built Pty Ltd undertook the build.
Education and Training Minister Jeremy Rockliff identified the importance of the facility.
“The theatre is a muchloved asset for the school community and regularly used for assemblies, celebration events, music events and theatre performances,” Mr Rockliff said.
“It is also an important facility for the broader community with amateur and professional performance groups also utilising the space.”
