Cat centre needs help with an upgrade

- DANIEL WEBB

TASMANIA’S largest dedicated cat management facility says it needs to raise $1.2 million to upgrade its services as demand increases.

The Ten Lives Cat Centre in New Town requires urgent upgrades, including the replacement of rented temporary buildings, the addition of isolation facilities, and more space to allow the cats to be housed comfortably.

Ten Lives manager Noel Hunt said the facilities desperately needed upgrading, with the organisation already caring for more than 2000 cats and kittens annually.

“The building is now totally inadequate for what we’re trying to do,” Mr Hunt said.

“We’re dealing with thousands of cats a year.”

He called on the community and the government to help fund the program.

“We have already written to the government and we’ll continue to put our case forward,” Mr Hunt said.

It is estimated that over the next five years 15,000 homeless cats will make their way through the centre, and thousands of students will complete their responsible cat ownership program.

Hobart media personality Dave Noonan has joined forces with the Ten Lives Cat Centre as an ambassador, and is aiming to bring attention to the project.

“It’s a huge project for the community,” he said.

Mr Noonan said the upgrades would only be possible with help.

“We’re hoping the community and the government get behind it so that we can support it and get it up,” he said.
