Collins comes up with one ‘ell of a shot to lift Wolves

- ADAM SMITH

A GAME-WINNING shot from star Ellie Collins has delivered the Southern Wolves a thrilling SBL victory against Glenorchy Spartans by the narrowest of margins.

In a tightly fought match which neither side was able to break apart, Collins (30 points) proved the hero after the Spartans had snatched the advantage with less than a minute left on the clock. Glenorchy had two chances to reclaim the lead but a costly turnover proved a dagger before a fadeaway prayer from Sarah O’Neill on the buzzer failed to drop.

Tayla Roberts (28) and Brooke Brown (14) combined with Collins in a threepronged attack, while Kara Rolls (24), O’Neill (21) and Kate Berry (14) paced the Spartans.

Ladder leaders Hobart Phoenix continued to ride their rollercoaster form with a comfortable 83-62 win against the Kingborough-Huon Kings.

On the back of red-hot shooting from Sharna Thompson (45 points) Hobart controlled the game for most of proceedings but the Kings stuck with the defending champions for the best part of three quarters before falling away in the last.

In men’s action, the Grenadiers claimed their second win in three games on the back of an almost flawless game to defeat the Kingborough-Huon Kings 74-59.

Matt Young lit up the floor with a match-high 32 points, with Sam Youl pitching in 17.

The Kings contingent of NBL1 young guns were all kept in check, with Elijah Pawson and Bane Shepherd managing just 13 points apiece, while Jacob Richards and Noah Straatsma were also kept quiet.

Glenorchy Spartans blew away the Southern Wolves in the remaining contest 103-58, despite the ejection of centre Callum Barker for two technical fouls in the first quarter.

Phoenix Robey and Jack Stanwix combined for 60 points.
