LAW and order is the state government’s focus for parliament this week.

Attorney-General Elise Archer said keeping Tasmanians safe through COVID was a priority, and this was no different from their law and order agenda.

“I’ll be introducing an amendment to the Corrections Act, which will provide express powers for electronic monitoring of parolees to ensure that they’re complying with conditions on their parole, and of course protecting the Tasmanian community,” she said.

She said the Dangerous Criminals and High Risk Offenders Bill 2020 was also likely to be debated this week.

“This Bill provides a new legislative framework for dealing with dangerous criminals and serious, high-risk offenders,” she said.

“There’s been some issues of course with the dangerous criminal declarations needing to be removed or made by the convicting or sentencing judge, and we’ll remove that.”

Ms Archer said she was also looking forward to seeing the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal Bill 2020 being debated in parliament.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said they would be supporting the introduction of the Dangerous Criminals Bill.

“Of course, with anything as significant as this, we would urge the government to use it cautiously and infrequently once it passed, presuming it is passed through the parliament,” she said.

“We understand the necessity for a bill like this.”

Ms White said her party also would support the passage of the Major Projects Bill through the Lower House.
