Economic boost beckons
Port Welshpool was convenient if you wanted to head to the NSW border but it’s a long drive to Melbourne. Walk-on passengers are best served by Station Pier at Port Melbourne. The tram works well and a full day can be spent in Melbourne. It’s a better run on public transport than from the airport. The move to Geelong does not suit passengers not travelling with a car.
When the Bass Strait Highway was first proposed it was to apply to passengers and cars. It only applies to the car and still more subsidies are proposed for cars, none for passengers. This is totally inequitable.

IT would be of massive benefit to Tasmania’s economy if a local shipbuilder designed and built the replacements for the Spirits. Austal chief David Singleton wrote an excellent Talking Point (“Split the job for best Tassie results” August 25). Whether a conventional single steel hull or locally made aluminium catamaran is ideal is a question for maritime experts. Amanda Ducker is spot on in regards to the ferry. Perhaps the time is approaching when a no-frills operation and quicker journey are the more popular alternative.
