Watching our businesses eroding away

-

READER Bill Perry advises Luke Martin and his ilk to chill out, and that all will return to normal (Letters, September 4). I attended a forum of 40-plus tourism operators, from small independent family businesses to key stakeholders. It was an honest and open session and all agreed health is the main consideration and they support our premier in actions to date. However, false starts in relation to reopening borders have shattered confidence. We are aware of the impact the Victorian situation has on decisions. There is a lot to be learned from this. We can do better to contain the virus and need to be prepared for outbreaks as they occur. Tourism operators are respectful and compliant with COVID-19 restrictions and have workplaces ready to reopen in a safe environment.

We are acutely aware of need to keep the virus contained and our population safe. It is, however, evident that extension to the December 1 date will result in many business casualties. Bookings are non-existent due to uncertainty of travel restrictions. I find it hard to chill out when you have to look decent, young, hardworking people in the eye and tell them they have no work. How do you chill out as you lay awake wondering how to meet your next wave of financial obligations and see your family business of 38 years eroding away. Consider the plight of businesses before dismissing devastating effects on operators, families and employees (or what’s left of them).
