CLAIRE CHANDLER
WHILE I have not always agreed with Tasmanian senator Claire Chandler’s opinions, I would certainly uphold her freedom to express them (“Senator hit for toilet remarks,” Mercury, September 5).
Unfortunately, we are seeing around the world an ever-increasing vocal minority shouting down opinions of those who express them, more often than not when that opinion is largely agreed with. We see large broadcasting companies, newspapers and corporations being hounded into terminating contracts of those who express a largely popular view. Let’s keep cancel culture out of Australia.
We are seeing a large increase in unisex toilets in public places, great, no argument with that. But what is wrong with ladies’ and men’s toilets, changerooms and showers being preserved in ladies’ and men’s sporting areas? The fact Senator Chandler has been summoned by the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner to explain her comments is, as she says, chilling.
Do we have unisex changerooms, unisex toilets and unisex showers?
Mike Dimond Blackmans Bay this? A senator stating a simple fact that resonates with the vast majority and being hauled before a commissioner. For what?
The people of Tasmania would do well to watch Senator Chandler’s speech and write to the premier demanding a return to sanity. With thousands out of work, why do we need this expensive, non-producing quango?
