THE BODYGUARD

Movies Romance 408, 8.30pm

In this 1992 drama that cleaned up at the box office, the late Whitney Houston stars as Rachel Marron, a superstar at her peak of her career who is adored by her fans. The only problem is, one of them wants to kill her – that’s where security expert Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner, pictured with Houston) comes in. While Farmer is a professional who never lets his guard down, it’s not long before they fall in love in this classic outing with a ripper soundtrack that includes Houston belters I Have Nothing, Run To You, Queen of the Night and, of course, her rendition of the Dolly Parton hit I Will Always Love You.

WEST SIDE STORY

Fox Classics 113, 8.30pm

This all-singing, all-dancing turf war classic between rival gangs the Jets and the Sharks has captivated audiences for just shy of 60 years, and for good reason. The musical ‘update’ of Romeo and Juliet contains standout performances from the likes of Natalie Wood (Maria), Richard Beymer (Tony) and George Chakiris (pictured, Bernardo), a cracking Stephen Sondheim/Leonard Bernstein score and choreography that was well ahead of its time.

Even better, it’s just as thought-provoking and exhilarating today, as it was no doubt in 1961. If you’re a fan of Wood, you’ll be pleased to know West Side Story is followed by Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice

at 11.05pm.
