Elderslie’s shield win

- STUART EATON

Elderslie secured its third victory in the Barclay Shield conducted at the Devonport, Riverside and Royal Hobart golf clubs on Monday.

For the first time in the history of the event, regional finals were introduced to determine who would emerge victorious.

Julie Hannibal, Angela Cripps, Sandra Spicer and Cheryl Butler narrowly won the 18-hole team foursomes event with a net score of 140½.

The ladies from Elderslie took out the Southern regional final and state title by half a stroke from Orford Golf Club on 141.

Orford Golf Club was represented by Helen Fox, Margie Playsted, Anne Mason and Libby Brown.

New Town Bay and Royal Hobart golf clubs rounded out the top four teams, finishing with 142½ and 148½ respectively.

Prospect Vale’s Elizabeth Barker, Debbie Davey, Deidre Panton and

Katrina Archer won the Northern regional final with 150½ and placed fifth in the statewide standings.

Seabrook Golf Club’s Hannah Mackey, Jean Samec, Pen Evetts and Kathy Woolley won the North West regional final with 152½ and finished sixth overall.

Claremont Golf Club hosted the semi and final rounds of the Southern Country Golf Association’s RHL Roberts Memorial Trophy on Sunday.

The morning round saw the Tea Tree pairing of Paul Howard and Matthew Street defeat Kingston Beach Golf Club’s Matthew Glover and David Pretyman 3&1.

Royal Hobart’s Joey Bower and Paul Read defeated North West Bay’s Trent Riseley and Oscar Burrell 3&2.

Morning victories ensured spots in the final for both teams that saw the lads from Seven Mile Beach claim victory over Tea Tree 3&1.

“We had a few tight matches that were all a fight to the end and it was good to get a win for Royal Hobart,” Bower said.

While Bower has never contested the event before, it was Read’s second victory, having won for Tasmania while partnering Craig Christie in 2010. “Sunday’s rounds were hard fought wins with both matches coming down to the last few holes,” Read said. “It was a great concept this year with the qualifying round.”

Sunday’s win by Royal Hobart is the club’s 12th RHL Roberts Trophy title win and first since 2011.
