Second start a sensation

- PETER STAPLES

IT has been a while since an outsider has won a Breeders’ Classic in Tasmania but that’ s what happened at the Devonport Show ground this week when Recall ($41) gave his rivals a galloping lesson in the North-West Greyhound Club’s feature juvenile event over452metres.

The Jack Jury-trained pup was having only his second start, but he delivered a performance more akin to a seasoned professional.

Recall began well from the squeeze box (5) and after a battle for the lead with one of the favourites, Highland Chief ($2.40), the son of Superior Product gained the upper hand and sped clear. The red fawn dog went on to defeat Highland Chief by three lengths with outright favourite Wynburn Sheean ($2,15) the same margin away third and the winner stopped the clock at 25.7 seconds.

“To be honest, I went to the races thinking if he ran third in that field, he’d have done a great job; so when he won, it brought a tear to my eye,” Jury said.

“I knew I had a nice dog in my care but now I reckon he could be a bit special .”

Jury, 58, has only been training for five years but he has bred some handy chasers.

The first dog he partowned and raced in partnership was Jack O’Riley (201213) and he was later sold to West Australian trainer Linda Britton for whom the dog won 10 and notched as many minor placings from 23 starts in WA. The Brighton-based trainer-breeder also bred Blue Bentley that was sold to interstate interests after winning four races as a young dog in Tasmania.

Recall was bred by the trainer and his son, Scott, who bought Princess Roman as a breeding prospect from Terry and Betty Penny.

“Princess Roman has had a few litters, but Recall is from her last. I used to get the dogs going and then give them to other trainers, but I’ll be keeping this one.”

Jury said Recall would have a couple of days off before a grade six event over 461 metres at Hobart next week. PREMIER greyhound trainer Anthony Bullock produced Wilma’s Shadow for a very impressive debut win in Launceston on Monday night.

Wilma’s Shadow (Brett Lee-Fancy Ruby) drew box six, which no doubt attributed to her starting price of $10 but she began so well she had the lead well before the top turn before winning by six lengths from Bust Me Gall. Highgate Tiger was two lengths a stern.

Wilma’s Shadow’s litter brother, Preston Lee, also won on de but but has not won since from nine tries.

STAR sprinter Siberia will line up in a Best Eight event over 461 metres in Hobart on Thursday night as he charges towards the Million Dollar Chase in Sydney next month.

The youngster has a love affair with the Hobart track with his latest victory on the U-bend circuit last week in an invitation over 461 min which he defeated Fabulous Baroque and Mr Camacho. The trio clash again on Thursday night.
