Season short but so sweet

THE 2020 southern Tasmanian winter netball season was short, but there was no shortage of enthusiasm on the court during finals week.

The roster which usually runs for 20 weeks was cut to 10 weeks inline with corona virus restrictions on sport and public gatherings.

Community netball was able to resume from July 13, with the top-tier Tasmanian Netball League able to commence in late July.

Southern Tasmanian Netball Association president Glynis Devereux said the season went remarkably well, with 190 teams catering for players from under 11 s to seniors.

Teams across all age groups played finals on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday last week.

“We are so lucky our girls are able to play. If we had been in Victoria there would have been no netball,” Mrs Devereux said. “The players were just over the moon, especially the little ones and those who were playing their first games.

“It was lovely for them.

“The people in centre management did a wonderful job .”

In line with coronavirus gathering restrictions, winter netball games were shortened to 12-minute quarters to allow

the netball centre to be cleared before teams and supporters arrived for the next round of games.

Priceline Pharmacy Kingston Blues division one player Bek Boonstra, 15, said it was great to cap off the year with a finals win against the Cripps Waratah son Saturday.

“I really missed net ball so it was great to get back into it,” she said.
