Double the glory for Roser

WINNING a Group 2 event at Moonee Valley with a nationally acclaimed mare and capturing a maiden with a lightly raced filly in Devonport are worlds apart, but the excitement level for owner Wayne Roser was similar.

When Mystic Journey powered home to win the Stocks Stakes at Moonee Valley last Friday night it sent chills up his spine and silenced the critics who had written the mare off after two unplaced efforts in Melbourne this preparation

At Spreyton yesterday his lightly raced filly Black Magic Woman delivered the goods in a maiden over 1350m and the look on his face after she powered home along the rails to win in a head-bobbing finish, said it all.

“Of course winning the Group 2 with Mystic Journey was an outstanding result and is head and shoulders above the quality of race Black Magic Woman won here at Devonport today, but every win is exciting no matter what grade you’re in,” Roser said.

Trainer Adam Trinder said Black Magic Woman has been a work in progress and that she has always given him the impression she will be best when placed over ground beyond 1600m.

“She’s won her maiden over 1350m and that is probably as short as she wants it, but I am looking forward to racing her over longer trips around January,” he said.

He agreed the Tasmanian Oaks could be the main target for the daughter of Dream Ahead.

BRIGHTON trainer Terry Evans says Loki Patera will back up in Hobart next Sunday after winning a 0-60 over 1009m in Devonport yesterday.

Loki Patera ($9) led in the small field of seven and despite being challenged strongly in the closing stages he refused to wilt and hung on to defeat Tiltherewarsyou ($15) with Schazem ($13) over a length away third.

“I was reasonably confident he would lead them up today and be too strong for them and that’s how it’s panned out,” Evans said.

“There’s a suitable race in Hobart next Sunday, so I’ll see how he pulls up and possibly go there next.

“He’ll get a bit of weight, but I won’t put a claiming apprentice on and instead stick with Mehmet (Ulucinar) who gets on well with the horse and he does all of the work on him.”

The two favourites, Fitzwilliam ($2.70) and Bandinelli ($2.60) were never in the hunt.

They finished last and fifth respectively in the field of seven.

BORN Magic delivered another tough-as-teak performance to take out the Dean Rawlings Memorial Benchmark 66 handicap over 1350m to register her third win in five starts this preparation.

Born Magic ($5.50) traced outside the leader Gee Gees Cricket to the home turn and when rider Georgie Catania gave the mare more rein she bounded clear. Despite running out in the home straight she went on to core from rank outsider Tezlah ($67) with Miss Excess ($3.70) running on well to grab third ahead of Fiveandfurther ($3.40).

Trainer Scott Brunton said the mare has shown a liking for the synthetic.

“This mare goes well here in Devonport, but she also is no slouch on the grass, so I’m looking forward to getting her back on the turf while she is in this type of form.”
