Meth dealer mum jailed
Turned to trafficking through trauma and debt
A WARRANE mother who used crystal meth to selfmedicate after a history of trauma will spend a year in jail after she was caught trafficking the drug.
Vanessa Lee Wolf, 43, started using ice at age 26 after she was abused growing up and later tragically lost her threemonth-old-child.
She appeared in the Supreme Court of Tasmania on Monday for sentence after she pleaded guilty to one count of trafficking in a controlled substance and one count of dealing with proceeds of crime.
Judge Gregory Geason said on December 21 last year, a car in which Wolf was travelling was pulled over by police at Warrane.
He said she was caught with 26.5g of ice in total, which was in several snap-lock bags, and $3920cash.
Justice Geason said the drugs would have had a street value between $7570 and $26,500.
On top of her personal traumas, Wolf had begun taking the drug after her previous partner was sent to jail, leaving her in financial difficulties to re pay their mortgage alone.
“It was in the context of these troubles that you were introduced to methamphetamine,” he said.
The court previously heard that Wolf felt safer in jail than in the outside world and that she had a list of prior convictions that was 55 pages long.
She was on parole for other crimes when she was caught trafficking last year.
“There is a need to deter others from behaviours such as yours,” Justice Geason said. “By your conduct, you have contributed to others embarking on a similar path to yours .”
However, Justice Geason also noted Wolf was committed to her rehabilitation.
He convicted her and sentenced her to 22 months in jail, with a non-parole period of 12months.
She was also ordered to pay $3043 in drug analysis costs.
