Graduates ra ring togo for tilt at men’s and women’s titles

- ADAM CLIFFORD

AS the Premier League hockey finals commence this weekend, North-West Graduates are well positioned for an assault on the men’s and women’s titles.

After falling short in their centenary season in 2019, Graduates have built an imposing record in the men’s competition with 13 wins, one draw an done loss.

Coach Stephen McMullen says it’s been a season full of challenges that’s forced them to adapt and think outside the square, but critically they have a healthy list this time around.

“This stage last season, Go bind Gill was on one leg, Jai Walker-Kidd was carrying an injury and Lewis Short was dealing with a very tough family matter , ”McMul lens aid.

“This year we have managed injuries and setbacks well and had the luxury of a deep squad.”

“It’s a simple message but, our current position, we only need to win two games of hockey.”

McMullen feels like the squad’s defensive work has been their area of greatest improvement, while Gill has slotted seamlessly into Eddie Ockenden’s attacking midfielder role, after the national skipper’s return to Perth midseason.

“Eddie spoke about our structure and press, reinforcing the system we play. His messages were simple but hugely relevant and invaluable for all to hear. You never know, he may be back in the next couple of weeks.”

Graduates’ women’s squad have built a similarly imposing record of 12 wins, two draws and one loss, but head an open title race with the heavy- scoring OH A in second position.

New coach Josh Mardell has moulded a well-versed side, defensively organised but clinical in the attacking circle, as evidenced by top scorer Grace Calvert’s fourteen goals.

“I’ ve been really happy with the season so far, with the girls having exceeded expectation so far ,” Mar dell said.

“The main theme for the year has been defensive intensity and effort, which the girls have taken on as their own team identity.

“The girls are super focused on next week and have been for the past couple of weeks, so we are ready for it.”

The Premier League semi finals will begin from 12:30pm (women) and 2pm (men) on Saturday.
