- KASEY WILKINS

TASMANIA Police officers stood united on Tuesday to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving thecommunity.

Across the country, police pa used to reflect on those officers who had died on duty as part of National Police Remembrance Dayon Tuesday.

Tasmania’ s service was held at the University of Tasmania’ s Stanley Bur bury lecture theatre at 11 am, with a live stream available to members of the public.

Tasmania Police Commissioner Darren Hine said it was a solemn day for the policecommunity.

Addressing the service, Commissioner Hines aid one of the key themes of the National Police Memorial was that those who have made the ultimate sacrifice were ordinary people who showed extraordinary qualities.

“The men and woman of our police service are exactly that—ordinary people here to do extraordinary things for our community every single say ,” hesaid.

Governor Kate Warner said it was a time for the police community to reflect on their losses and for the community to express its condolences and thanks to every member of Tasmania Police and their families for their continued service and sacrifice.

“While we are fortunate there are no fatalities recorded among Tasmania Police officers this year, we share with our Victorian colleagues and with a heavy heart the loss off our officers while on duty in April.”

Victoria Police officers Con stable Joshua Prestney, Con stable Glen Humphris, Senior Con stable Kevin King and Leading Senior Con stable Lyn et te Taylor were killed in a crash on Melbourne’ s Eastern Freeway.

“As a policing community we all feel the hurt and the pain that those who are left behind suffer, so we want to gather around as a policing family to remember those four police officers ,” Commissioner Hine said. Policing could be a really tough profession, but it was also very rewarding.

“We’ re very fortunate to live in Tasmania and to police the Tasmanian community, because police can’ t do it alone —we have to police with the community for the community ,” he said.

“As officers stand together in camaraderie, I encourage each and everyone of them to take care of themselves and to support and care for those who serve beside them.”
