IT’S CRUCIAL CATS FIGHT WEAPONS

- NICK SMART

GEELONG wing man Sam Menegola says his side must contain Port Adelaide’ s inside mid field‘ weapons’ if it is to pre vail in Thursday night’ s qualifying final. The Cats go into the clash at Adelaide Oval ass light underdogs despite their thrashing of the Power back in Round 12. Men ego la– who has enjoyed a career-best season– said his side was well aware of the danger posed by the minor premier. “We think they have some real weapons ,” Men ego la said. “Clearly they finished on top so they’ re a genuinely good side. They’ ve got a clear strength in the way they move the ball and they can be really potent, and they’ ve got some serious weapons around thec ontest. “Especially their inside midfielders, so we’ re going to have to be able to match them in thoses or to fare as.” Gee long will be looking to avenge last year’s finals letdown, when it finished on top but lost the qualifying final to Collingwood before being bundled out by Richmond in the preliminary final. “We’ ve obviously had a few chances that we haven’ t been quite good enough to take with this group over the last few years ,” Men ego la said. “That can only make you want it more for sure. To be fair tough, I think every club wants it as bad as each other .” Many were surprised to see Men ego la miss out on the All-Australian team following a stand out season on the wing. The 28-year-old said he was “humbled” just to have made the squad of 4 0. “There were some very good players that missed out on that 40,” he said .“If you were offered a spot in that squad at the start of the year, most players would take it.

“It’ s the cruel nature of AFL footy that you get in the squad and then you want to get in the side. Naturally because we’ re ambitious you’ re disappointed when you don’ t get in, but I feel humbled to be in the squad.”
