JEREMIAH proved he is on target to tackle a few feature races later in the season with a gutsy win in a benchmark 74 handicap over 1600 metres in Launceston­lastnight.

The Scott Brunton-trained gelding went into the race on the back of an impressive win in Hobart and while Friday night’s field boasted only four starters he was up against stablemate Sir Simon that was backedinto­startthe$1.90favourit­e.

Sir Simon raced outside of the leader Aspirate ($11) while apprentice Kyle Maskiell settled Jeremiah ($2.30) third with the outsider Sh’bourne Star last after missing the start bytwolengt­hs.

Sir Simon poured the pressureon­Aspirateup­onstraight­ening and kicked clear under strong riding from Maskiell,

Jeremiah gained the upper hand in the shadows of the post to score by a short halfhead.

“I don’t have any set plan for Jeremiah but as long as he keeps on winning and improves with each outing, I’ll be more than happy,” Brunton said.

DREWTYSON celebrated­his first winner as a trainer when his consistent gelding Mywordisde­liveredthe­goodsina maiden-class metres.

Mywordis settled midfield but when rider Ismail Toker called on the four-year-old to extend he quickly rounded up the leaders and went on to scoreconvi­ncinglyfro­mLygon with Fagin’s Touch edging out GaiusJuliu­sforthird.
