‘ HUMAN SPACE’ A CUT ABOVE

- NAVARONE FARRELL

PARADISE Lost, one of Hobart’s most recognisable spaces for grooming, prides itself on catering to a range of clientele — and having a good time doing it.

Former Gold Coast barber and business owner Lee Power is now owner of the shop and said it was more than just somewhere for a haircut.

Cuts at Paradise Lost aren’t gendered — Mr Power calls it a “human to human” space, rather than a barber shop or a hairdresser.

The iconic pink space caters for men and women, and will soon be opening a backyard bar, while already supporting local musicians and DJs.

“We’re building a bar under that, we’re decking the whole back area and we’re putting a beautiful astrological mural,” Mr Power said.

“The last Saturday of the month we’ll hold little soirees there and put on a keg and get four or five bands to play.”

Mr Power is also planning a retail space called Paradise Found, which will sell hair product, vintage clothes and more.

“The more men with perms the safer this world will be and the more entertaining it will be for everyone,” Mr Power laughed.

“Barber shops in my mind have been a communal hub and a place for the community — for all genders.

“The whole decor and the whole vibe of the store … the barbering industry doesn’t guide my direction.

“Our whole politic with the pink was I wanted to move it as far away as possible from a barber shop.”
