HOWZAT FOR A SPELL?

- ADAM SMITH

University’s Seth Denny has produced an all- round performance for the ages, leading his under- 15 side with an incredible 8- 5 — including a stunning hat- trick — from five overs with the ball against Kingborough before scoring an unbeaten 33 in the run chase to steer the Lions to the win in their 2020- 21 season opener.

SETH Denny couldn’t have picked a better time to produce a stunning all- round performance for University’s Under- 15 side on Sunday.

More noted for his batting, the 13year- old snared an incredible 8- 5 from five overs with the ball against Kingborough at Soldiers Memorial Oval — including a hat- trick —

helping skittle the Knights for 60.

Denny then finished unbeaten on 33 in the run chase to steer the Lions to victory in their 2020- 21 season opener.

And not only was the match live streamed, with highlights of all his wickets available online, it also gave Denny family bragging rights over older brother Noah, who took 6- 10 in a match last year.

“Usually I’m more confident with

the bat, by the third wicket I was thinking ‘ geez … I didn’t know what was happening’,” the youngster said.

“Once the innings finished, I was shocked.”

Denny’s fourth over was the most memorable, where not only did he claim his hat- trick on the opening three balls, but picked up a fourth wicket on the fifth.

“I was nervous [ on the hat- trick ball] but the boys definitely got

around me so I felt that confidence.

“Once I went up and appealed, and the umpire gave it out [ LBW], I couldn’t believe it.”

Uni lost three early wickets in reply, but Denny anchored the chase with a measured 90- ball knock in just under two hours.

Lions coach Sean Stevenson said the decision to throw the ball to the medium pacer came due to the condition of the pitch.

“The wicket was playing a bit slow so I said to the boys if things weren’t really happening early, we would take some pace off the ball,” Stevenson said.

“Seth bowls some little seam up wobblers and just had it moving around enough.”
