KINGS STILL WANT BOGUT

- MATT LOGUE

The Sydney Kings are still interested in Andrew Bogut and will keep the final spot on their roster open while the big man decides his future.

Bogut, the NBL MVP in 2018- 19, remains unsure about his next career move due to the uncertainty around the coronavirus pandemic.

Since parting ways with the Kings in late May, the Boomers big man has been spending time with family as he weighs up returning to the NBL or NBA as a lead- up to next year’s Tokyo Olympics.

However, Bogut is yet to decide with the Olympics and many competitions across the world not guaranteed to proceed due to the pandemic.

This has left the 35- year- old playing the waiting game on his future as NBL teams prepare for the 2021 season.

Kings CEO Chris Pongrass confirmed the franchise could still fit Bogut in if he wanted to return, even if the team’s final roster spot is filled.

“There is always movement throughout the start of a season and Bogues is definitely one of those opportunities that we have to weigh up, and the pros and cons of if and when,” Pongrass said.

“We are never shutting the door, but we haven’t filled that position purposely because we have been waiting for the right candidate.”

Pongrass stressed there was no pressure on Bogut to decide his future and the franchise understands his decision to weigh up his options during a period of significant global uncertainty.

“Andrew told us he wanted to wait and see what was happening with the NBL, the NBA and the Olympics and we were fully respectful of that,” he said. “We told him to go and do his thing, take your time and look after your body.
